Goga Khaindrava, a supporter of ‘Georgian Dream,’ is suing TV Formula

At a press conference held on January 21, “Georgian Dream” supporter Goga Khaindrava announced that he is suing tv “Formula.”

On January 17, “Shabatis Formula” (Saturday Formula) aired a report about Goga Khaindrava. According to the report, Khaindrava is allegedly involved in corruption schemes.

After the report was broadcast, the show’s host, Davit Kashiashvili, stated that he received a threatening letter from an unknown individual. The author of the threat wrote to the journalist: “Tbilisi is a small city… take care of yourself, buddy.”

Davit Kashiashvili personally announced this during a live broadcast of the program, thereby notifying the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia about the matter.

TV ‘Imedi’ is trying to discredit Vika Bukia

On January 20, Pro-Government TV”Imedi” published a clip on its social media page taken from a monologue by TV Pirveli journalist Vika Bukia, with the caption: “The grammatical ‘education’ of a propagandist.”

Vika Bukia is a journalist known for her critical stance toward “Georgian Dream.” It is for this reason that the pro-government TV station “Imedi” singled out an excerpt from the journalist’s monologue and, for the purpose of discrediting her, labeled her a “propagandist.”

Threats against a journalist following the investigative report aired on ‘Saturday Formula’

On January 17, after an investigative report aired on Saturday Formula about the possible involvement of “Georgian Dream” supporter Goga Khaindrava in corruption schemes, the program’s host, Davit Kashiashvili, received a threatening message on social media from an unknown person. The author of the threat wrote to the journalist: “Tbilisi is a small city… take care of yourself, buddy.”

Davit Kashiashvili announced the incident himself during the program’s live broadcast, thereby informing the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia. It is also noteworthy that a few weeks earlier Saturday Formula had prepared a report on Goga Khaindrava’s property, after the broadcast of which the director publicly stated his intention to file a lawsuit against the television company.

According to the assessment of the Charter of Journalistic Ethics, this case of threats against a journalist is particularly alarming against the backdrop of inadequate protection of journalists’ safety in Georgia. The organization calls on the Ministry of Internal Affairs to immediately investigate the incident and ensure the journalist’s safety.

Fines and seizures for a journalist’s professional activities

On August 30, 2025, Tozu Gulmamedli, a journalist for the independent online media outlet “Mautskebeli,” was fined 5,000 GEL for a second time on the grounds of “blocking the road” near the Parliament building. Although the journalist was performing her professional duties – as evidenced by materials published on “Mautskebeli’s” platforms investigative authorities failed to take this circumstance into account.

According to information released by “Mautskebeli,” the National Bureau of Enforcement has frozen the journalist’s bank accounts and threatened to seize property registered in her name, granting her a seven-day deadline to comply with the aforementioned demand.

Such practices constitute the criminalization of journalistic activity and an interference with professional duties. Furthermore, the use of seizures acts as a mechanism for additional financial pressure and substantially restricts the freedom of a journalist to carry out their professional activities.

Criminal prosecution may be initiated against Afgan Sadigov

On January 16, Tbilisi City Court Judge Nino Enukidze terminated the administrative proceedings initiated against journalist Afgan Sadigov and referred the case to the Tbilisi Police Department, as the court assessed that his actions may contain elements of a criminal offense. This means that the journalist faces the risk of a criminal investigation being launched.

The case concerns an incident that occurred on December 17–18, 2025. The Ministry of Internal Affairs accuses Afgan Sadigov of obstructing traffic and/or pedestrian movement. According to the court’s assessment, since the journalist had already been subjected to an administrative penalty on the same grounds in October 2025, the conduct contains signs of a criminal offense.

This decision was made against the backdrop of legislative amendments under which, in the event of a repeated violation, administrative liability is replaced by criminal liability.

The propaganda narrative against Mzia Amaghlobeli aired on POSTV

On January 12, the POSTV program “Analytica” aired a report titled “The Criminal Chronology of Criminal Mzia Amaghlobeli,” which employs stigmatizing and discrediting language against journalist Mzia Amaghlobeli, the founder of the publications Batumelebi and Netgazeti.

The report is built on a narrative suggesting that the ongoing protest processes in the country are managed by the so-called “Global War Party.” In this context, emphasis is placed on alleged violence by protesters against the police. The segment reinforces this narrative by portraying Mzia Amaghlobeli as “one of the figures in a script drafted by the Global War Party.” Furthermore, it uses an incident involving a police officer to solidify her stigmatization, depicting her as an assailant and an aggressor against law enforcement. The report ignores the broader context and other significant circumstances.

Overall, the segment creates a sharply biased narrative in which the police are cast in the role of the victim, while the journalist is presented as a figure posing a threat to society. Such rhetoric is part of a systemic trend of discredit against Mzia Amaghlobeli and facilitates the deliberate manipulation of public opinion against her.

On January 12, 2025, Mzia Amaghlobeli was arrested on charges of assaulting a police officer for slapping the head of the Batumi Police, Irakli Dgebuadze. On August 6, 2025, the court sentenced her to two years in prison, while the charge was reclassified from “assault on a police officer” to “resistance, threat, or violence against a protector of public order.” Numerous international and local organizations have condemned Amaghlobeli’s imprisonment and called for her release. She is considered a political prisoner.

Kakha Kaladze is attempting to discredit a TV Pirveli journalist

On January 12, during a public comment, Kakha Kaladze verbally insulted a journalist from the TV company TV Pirveli. The incident followed a question posed by the journalist regarding the presence at the port of Kulevi of a vessel marked as part of the so-called “shadow fleet” and the risk of secondary sanctions being imposed on the country.

The mayor’s response to the journalist’s question contained offensive statements, including accusations that the journalist was lying and attempting to mislead the public. Despite the journalist’s efforts to obtain serious answers and relevant evidence, Kaladze continued to make insulting remarks.

Such rhetoric toward critical media outlets is systemic in nature and is regularly used by representatives of “Georgian Dream,” which significantly harms the environment for journalistic activity, especially when covering issues of high public interest.

The CNews outlet’s website was taken offline, and employees were locked out of the office

On January 8, 2026, the website of the news agency CNews went offline. When attempting to access the site, a message appeared stating, “Disconnected due to outstanding debt.” On the same day, employees of the agency and of the newspaper Kronika Plus (which share the same founder) were unable to enter the editorial office building, as they found that the door lock had been changed.

The founder of the outlets, Eliso Kiladze, blamed the incident on her former business partner, who is also the owner of the business center where the newsrooms are located. According to her, the website had no outstanding debts, and its shutdown could have been carried out by the former business partner, who had access to the site. Eliso Kiladze linked the problem to a dispute with her former business partner and described it as an act of retaliation.

The organization “Journalistic Ethics Charter” called on the relevant authorities to promptly look into the incident and to “immediately ensure that the journalistic staff of CNews and the newspaper Kronika Plus are granted access to their workplace, that their computers are not damaged, and that unauthorized individuals do not gain access to the information stored on their electronic devices.”

The TV channel Euronews Georgia will no longer cover news from Georgia

The TV channel Euronews Georgia is changing its format and, starting in 2026, will no longer cover news from Georgia. In an official statement, the channel linked this decision to financial resources.

“Analysis of the financial situation revealed that, given the trends in the television advertising market in Georgia, the current broadcasting model of the channel cannot generate sufficient financial resources to cover the channel’s operating expenses and the financial obligations under the franchise agreement with Euronews SA. Considering the above factors, a decision has been made, within the company’s strategic development framework, to transition the channel to a new format,” the statement said.

According to the same statement, under the updated model, the main focus will be on international content adapted for the Georgian audience.

Euronews Georgia was founded in 2019 by the international channel Euronews and its partner Silknet. The chairman of Silknet’s supervisory board is businessman Giorgi Ramishvili. The channel began broadcasting in Georgia in 2020. In the past two years, seven media outlets in Georgia have ceased operations for various reasons.

Gia Gachechiladze, a supporter of “Georgian Dream,” insulted Mzia Amaghlobeli

Gia Gachechiladze, a supporter of “Georgian Dream” and host of the show “Ai Ucnobi” referred to Mzia Amaghlobel, founder of Netgazeti/Batumelebi and journalist, using insulting epithets.

“I would also punch Mzia Amaghlobeli and throw her out; she pretends to be a media luminary, not a Sakharov Prize winner, but just an ordinary abuser,” said Gia Gachechiladze. Gachechiladze is known for making offensive statements against independent non-governmental organizations and journalists.

Mzia Amaghlobeli was first detained administratively on January 11, 2025, and a few hours later, on January 12, was taken into criminal custody. On August 6, 2025, the Batumi City Court sentenced the journalist to two years in prison, a decision later upheld by the Kutaisi Court of Appeal.
